18th Nov. 2011 - AGONY OF FLOOD VICTIMS By: D. Anyanga
Nyando human rights network -an organization championing for the rights of neglected groups in Nyando, Nyakach and Muhoroni constituencies today visited flood victims currently camping at Bwanda primary school in Kasang'any, Kadibo division.

The purpose of the visit was to witness the real situation on the ground following the recent appeal for food, medication and shelter by the victims who have been forgotten for the last one month. The team lead by co-ordinator James Athembo Nam took a transect walk through Anyuro village to ascertain the state of more than seventy dilapidated houses as a result of the recent floods. Nan and the team called on the community, well wishers and the government to assist the victims rebuild their lives, provide farm inputs for the re planting to counter the looming hunger.

At least two thousand pupils drawn from four primary schools in nyando constituency have received a pair of shoes each courtesy of the safaricom and Julie Gichuru foundations in the ongoing "NATEMBEA CAMPAIGN". The campaign targets poor children in rural primary schools with an aim of eradicating jigger infestation among them.

Safaricoms senior public relations manager Washington Akumu who was the chief guest during the occasion, took time to encourage parents to always maintain proper shoe hygiene for the war against jiggers to be successful. The pupils from Kasuna, Nyomwaro, Bunde and Ombaka special primary schools were also taught how best to wash their hands with medicated soaps and detergents to prevent diarrhea related infections caused by poor hygiene.

The shoes were purchased from BATA at a cost of ksh.500,000, the exercise was held at Bunde primary bringing together all parents and teachers from the four schools.
