14/11/2011 - Plant Water Friendly Trees By: Dominic Anyanga

People living along River Nyando and other streams in Kano are encouraged to keenly observe the thirty meter rule when cultivating along river banks. Planting water friendly trees will go along way to preventing soil erosion and scarcity of water.

Kano plains water resources users association secretary Mr.Vincent Orayo, however, appealed to the community to be members of the Water Resource Users Association (WRUA - small groups formed by members of the community to manage water bodies in a given sub catchment area and monitored by WARMA- water resources management authority)and benefit directly from the decentralized funds through community projects. Mr. Orayo and his team visited Ombeyi river on Sunday to ascertain the damage and cost associated with encroachment.

The river is said to be heavily polluted and deeply encroached, endangering livelihoods of end users.
