15/11/2011 - Corruption at Ahero Sub District Hostpital By: Dominic Anyanga
The state of affairs at Ahero sub district hospital has worsened as patients agonize over corruption, poor sanitation, neglect, and poor service delivery by the hospital management.
Patients say nurses harass and ask for bribes before commencing treatment or issuing free government drugs. Family members and relatives watch helplessly as their patients faint and loose lives at the reception.
The poor state of service has forced patients to travel long distance for medical attention. Residents across Nyando constituency have now resolved to seeking medical help at Hongo Ogosa dispensary in Kadibo division, and local chemists within Ahero town for better services.
Most affected are HIV+ patients who line up for ARVs for over 8 hours without attention where some even collapse. Ten patients interviewed termed the facility as hell on earth with no or slim chances of survival upon admission.
The locals now want medical services minister to intervene by either closing the facility or improve the mess before more lives are lost.
