19th Nov. 2011 - Fish Farmers Encouraged to use Kisumu International airport by D. Anyanga
Fish farmers in Nyando are encouraged to largely invest in the trade in surplus for export using Kisumu international airport to boost the local economy and uplift their living standards. This follows the official launch of one of the biggest fish hatcheries within the constituency.
MOCOJO fish farm was purposely set up to propagate and supply fingerlings of all tilapia and cat fish varieties to meet the ever swelling demand for the services. The farm situated next to Hongo Ogosa dispensary approximately three kilometers from Ahero town produces twenty thousand fingerlings per week and sells each for five shillings which is said to be affordable to small scale farmers in the area compared to other producers.
According to the farms manager mzee Elisha Nyamwaya, the production is fully inspected, certified and closely monitored by the fisheries department for quality. The farm has two employees, one in the hatchery and another in the ponds. Anne Mokomo, the greater Nyando districts fisheries officer graced the occasion held in the farm last week, she was accompanied by her Kisumu east district counterpart.
