27th April, 2012 - POOR HOUSING BLAMED FOR FLOODS IN TOWN: By Dominic Anyanga
Nyando residents especially those living on the flood prone areas of ayweyo, bwanda, kanyagwal, ombeyi and parts of ahero town have been encouraged to desert the areas in time and move to evacuation centres or any higher grounds as the long rains began to wreak havoc in most parts of the district this month, Kenya red cross district coordinator Kennedy mulama says if early measures are taken then the looming disaster might not be devastating as it has been in the past, mulama blamed poor housing and drainage in awasi and ahero towns for the problem, a local engineer washingtom onyango adds that most rental houses in these towns were constructed in the 70s and do not conform to the current standards and population and therefore should be condemned and restructured to avert floods.

The worst hit areas following the recent rains are K'ochieng, kochogo south, nyang'oto, kore, rae and wasare in nyakach district where hundreds have been displaced, property damaged and livestock lost, the residents have of late appealed to well wishers to come to their aid with foodstuffs and clothing during floods to sustain them until water levels subside, so far Kenya red cross is on the ground in these areas in readiness for any disaster. ..More...

Three rivers in Nyando will from this month benefit from a rehabilitation exercise through a tree planting programme sponsored by ministry of environment and mineral resources,Kenya forest service and national environmental management authority-NEMA. The rehabilitation programme targets river Nyando where ten kilometers on both sides will be planted, river ombeyi and river kisanti both getting six kilometer coverage to completely wipe out the soil erosion menace common along the river banks, speaking during the launch of the programme at karanda primary school today, zonal forest manager in charge of Nyando nyakach and muhoroni districts Geoffrey mwaura encouraged the community to embrace and support tree parenting especially during this rainy season in order to sustain the programme.

Speaking on the same event Nyando district environment officer Daniel omwanza appealed to the community to cooperate and at least demystify rumors going around that the project will deny farmers the opportunity to operate normally with their farming activities, omwanza added that the project will involve the youth who will plant the trees at a fee, the trees will be purchased from local nurseries through area water resource users associations - WRUAs as a means of empowering the local people, on the security and sustainability of the project, omwanza urged the community to take the initiative of planting indigenous trees in large numbers, take care of them for generations since they will forever remain their property, he called upon other members of the community who do not own farms near these rivers to go for the seedlings if at all the security is guaranteed. The team continues with mobilization and awareness creation around Nyando as the exercise rolls on. ..More...
